Leave Your Phones at Home!

In a 2010 study done by Bavelier, Green and Dye, long term effects of technology on the brain function of youth conclusively proved that the wiring of the brain does change as technology pushes itself into every household. 2010 was a long time ago, guys! Nine years later and I can see the effects of my son’s brain change after a day or two without technology! It is time to unwind and unwire on a camping trip this year! Here are some of the best phone-free activities we want your family to try!

kids on phones

The first suggestion we have to get the kids to put away the tablets, tvs and cell phones is relay races! Relay races make their brains work harder than a video game. There are so many different ideas for relay races all over Pinterest. Working on team building and coordination with a 3-legged race would be a great way to get everyone outside! A egg-on-a-spoon relay will work on focus, balance and give everyone a good laugh at the end! Don’t forget to get yourself involved and leave your phone in the house!

Scavenger Hunts are up next! There is a scavenger hunt for every theme, place and time. You will have to prepare a head with a little more work on Pinterest but print them out and spend the day searching for goodies! You can try a trivia scavenger hunt as well, which will be much more difficult without technology! At Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ at Kozy Rest we try to have a scavenger hunt every weekend. Getting families outside is our number one goal!

The last idea we want to share is reading stories by the fire. Or reading stories anywhere! Yogi Bear™ loves bedtime stories! He has 2 personal favorites, The Bear Snores On and A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee. Every chance to read to your kids gives you the opportunity to share knowledge and bonding time. Campfires have always been known as a great time to enjoy family but let your kids pick out their favorite books and it becomes a next level experience! As the weather is getting warmer, don’t forget to take an evening away from cell phones and read a book!
